Since 1971, publicly traded REITs have seen an increase in total market cap from $1.4 Billion to over $1.2 Trillion dollars in 2020. That is a thousand fold increase in just 50 years. From a mere 34 REITs, this number has ballooned to over 225 publicly traded REITs in the US alone.
What is more impressive is the overall performance of REITs vs. the broad stock market during that period.
Between 1972 and 2019, REITs offered an annual return of 13.3% vs. 12.1% for the S&P 500.
While this may not seem like a big difference, it really does add up over the long term.
