Rich often said to his son, it you want to be rich you need to develop your vision. You need t be standing on the edge of time, gazing into the future. Rich would tell us stories of how Rockefeller became rich because he saw the growing importance of old due to the growing demand for automobiles. He also reminded us of how Henry Ford could see the middle class wanting cars of their own at a time when only the rich had cars. Today in more modern times Bill Gates became a billionaire because he saw the growth in PCs while IBM’s older and wider men saw the future in mainframes. The older men of IBM did not think like Henry Ford and so they lost the future for IBM and gave it to Microsoft. If I were an investor in IBM, I would have those men of blindness fired and have them pay their wages back. Instead they receive bonuses and the investors lost their future. The people who brought you Yahoo, Google, Facebook and other famous Internet companies became billionaires before the graduated from college because they saw the future.
If you missed the boat heading for the oil fields, the computer age or the Internet age, do not worry. There is another boat sailing. But if you are stuck in the past, your chances of mission the next boat or worse yet, climbing on the titanic because it is big and safe are pretty good, especially today with the context and content to the world changing so quickly.
Top Gun, if you saw the movie, you may recall that the time available to take the short at the enemy aircraft is measured in spot seconds. If y8u wait too long or are unprepared you will miss the opportunity. The same is true in the world of money.
The window of opportunity to take the shot in also narrow. If you are frozen in time, stuck in the past, dressing like your mom or dad, unprepared or lacking the business and investment skills required, you might not even see the opportunity. You will not only miss the window of opportunity, you may take shots at opportunities that are also frozen in time and not going anywhere.
