When you make more money, you often have to spend more and sometimes that means lower profit margins and more work. Sometimes I hear entrepreneurs talk about impact but more often than not, that seems to simply be another word for ego.
More small business owners are waking up to the reality of what they really want. Most entrepreneurs do not want to be Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos, not really. They do not want to sacrifice everything got the sake of changing the world. I do not. What they really want, what I believe is motivating most of us who are in this game, is not to scale into infinity. If is freedom, nothing in terms of time and money. If I can work fewer hours, have greater flexibility in my schedule and make more money than if I were at a day job, is not that better than killing myself to build something that I might be able to sell someday?
The truth is that you can have the freedom you want now, without sacrificing what matters most to you. It takes a little courage to do this, a willingness to follow the road less travelled but it worth it. And like I said, more and more people are realizing this for themselves and creating the kind of companies and lifestyles they used to dream of.
It was a guide. One of the key questions they had ask when a new business idea or growth opportunity arrived was. Is this going to be helpful or harmful to the emotional health and stability of our family?
It is so easy to talk yourself into something that you have the sneaking suspicion in not in the best interest of your relationships. Putting it on paper makes it something more concrete, harder to break. You have made a commitment to not only what is important to you but how you are willing to grow.
You think your current opportunity is the only one that will ever come along. But after many decades of building many businesses can attest there is always another opportunity around the corner.
